Spring 2014. Decided to try growing some hops. I figured I would find a collaborator or two to use ’em to brew some beer. I’d read that as aggressive rhizomes, they can take over if not contained, spreading underground. Can’t let that happen to the garden. Sourced some planters for the job.

2014 Morning Glory Madness
In 2014, the morning glories nearly took over the garden. OK, so I planted a few myself for color… I never thought they would be that aggressive. Lesson learned. Pretty, though.
2014 Veggies – August
By August, the garden is typically in high gear. Here we had a nice variety of good stuff– Purple Pole Beans, Cucumbers, Green Zebra tomatoes, Fox Cherry tomatoes, basil and thyme.
2014 First-Season Hops Springing Up
The hops rhizomes were planted at the end of April, 2014, as described in an earlier post.
By mid-May: signs of life. Couple of little shoots springing up in one planter.
2014 Memory Garden
What’s the memory garden? This is a long-term project I’ve had in my head for many years, and will take years to realize. I thought it would be nice to include in my larger garden a collection of plants that were from places I’ve lived over the years, and I’ve lived in a lot. Collect a seed from, or take a cutting of, a noteworthy plant, perhaps a run-of-the-mill maple or an extraordinary palm, from an address where I’ve lived, and try to grow it.
2014 Garden Flowers – Annuals
2014 was the first year we threw down some annual wildflowers along the inner sides of the east and west beds, along the rather harsh concrete border.
2014 Veggies – July
By mid-July, we were seeing some mature Japanese eggplant. I like these guys. They’re ideal for the grill, don’t even really need to slice them. Anything that’s prolific and yummy gets my vote, and eggplant have been prolific for us. And yummy. Continue reading 2014 Veggies – July
2014 Flowers – Perennials
We planted some spring bulbs. Man some of those things aren’t cheap! Some run five or ten dollars for one bulb. We mixed it up in terms of price range, but it seems I like lilies. Here are a few highlights. Continue reading 2014 Flowers – Perennials
2014 Veggies – June
By the first of June, the tomatoes were looking healthy in the beds. This one’s a Brandywine, heirloom variety.
2014 Veggies – April & May
It might provide a little context to show what the place looks like before we plant, each spring. More than a tad dreary, to be sure, but a blank canvas for what’s to come. At this point, I hadn’t had time to hide most of the ugly chain link fences that came with the place with a few reeds.
I had moved the few flower bulbs popping up into their relegated corners to make room for veggies. The occasional early marauder could be spotted working their dark machinations.
